The city was incorporated on December 20th, 1939, making it the oldest city of the four that occupy the Palos Verdes Peninsula. A substantial amount of land in the community is planned and dedicated as undeveloped open field habitat, with access to an extensive system of beautiful hiking trails, and road bike lanes and mountain bike trails. Equestrian facilities and horse trails are nearby.

Views in Palos Verdes Estates include the Pacific Ocean to the southwest or “Queen’s Necklace” and Beach Cities to the North. There are several accessible beaches although most of the predominantly rocky shoreline is marked by beautiful high cliffs, located primarily along the western and southern areas of the Peninsula.
2010 Census: Palos Verdes Estates had 13,438 residents living in just over 5,000 households. There were 5,283 housing units at an average density of 1,106.6 per square mile, of which 88.7% were owner-occupied, and 11.3% were occupied by renters. The homeowner vacancy rate was 0.7%; the rental vacancy rate was 5.6%.
